When the week began, Cy-Fair ISD had the state’s No. 3 team in boys and girls basketball, but the Cypress Falls (20-3, 4-0) guys were the only ones that took care of business. The Jersey Village Lady Falcons fell to Cypress Ranch on Tuesday, and the Golden Eagles escaped with Friday’s 56-53 victory against Cypress Creek (16-7, 3-1). The latter erased a double-digit deficit with two minutes to play, and now lead 17-6A by themselves.
“It was big time,” head coach Richard Flores said of the performance.
Flores’ team was playing without Louisiana-Lafayette commit Trajan Wesley, so other players had to step up. VYPE Player of the Game Nigel Hawkins led the charge, scoring 12 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter. He was joined by Andrew Nguyen and Kendall Scott, who finished with 14 and 13 respectively.
“We’ve been here before,” Hawkins said of the seniors stepping up. “We’re the leaders. We have to lead by example.”
The Eagles fell behind because Creek went on a 19-2 run in the first half. Rashad Perkins led the Cougars with all 14 of his points before the fourth quarter, and Marcus Merchant added eight of his 13 in the second half.
